Amokura Dolphins is a nautically orientated youth group for
children aged between 10-12 years. We
provide activities that build confidence on and off the water. Our aim is to help to develop co-operation
and leadership skills that will be useful in later life. We are run by the Sea Cadet Association of New Zealand (SCANZ) and are associated with TS Amokura Sea
Cadets which meets at the same location. Although we are not part of the New Zealand Cadet Forces, most Dolphins aim to join TS Amokura Sea Cadets once they are 13.
Our Dolphin group meets at the Wellington Cadet Centre which is located at 393 Evans Bay Parade, Hataitai, Wellington (just north of Hataitai Beach).
Amokura Dolphins meet on Tuesday nights. In summer (terms 1
and 4) we start at 6:00 pm, early enough to get time on the water. In winter (terms 2 and 3) we start at 6:30 pm
but on all nights we finish around at or shortly after 8.00 pm.
During the summer months (terms 1 and 4) we go kayaking on Evans Bay or do some other water based activities whenever the weather allows. If that is not possible we stay on land and do other activities such as playing indoor or outdoor games (generally activities involving team work and a physical challenge). We also run a training schedule where Dolphins gain promotion by learning various skills like knot tying, cooking, road safety or first aid.
During the winter months (terms 2 and 3) we supplement our games and training activities with visits to Laserforce, Fergs Rock Climbing, Kilbirnie Fire Station. Sometimes we also invite visiting speakers to talk with the Dolphins.
Each year we aim to hold two or maybe three weekend camps. Sometimes we join with another Dolphin group
associated with the Petone based TS Tamatoa Sea Cadets.
