Lieutenant Commander Stephen Worth joined TS Amokura (Wellington) in 1982. He progressed through the ranks, becoming a Master Cadet in 1988 and earning various boating qualifications, including a Master Coxswain’s rating and Coastguard Boat Master Certificate. In 1990 he was commissioned as an Ensign in the NZCF and was subsequent promoted through Sub Lieutenant and Lieutenant, to reach the rank of Lieutenant Commander in 2001. He has completed all of the normal SCC officer training courses, and has staffed more than 15 National Sailing Charge and Marine Activity Supervisor’s Courses. LTCDR Worth was appointed as Unit Commander of TS Amokura in 1993 and served 17½ years in the role. During that time Amokura won the National Efficiency competition on two occasions. He has also served as the Unit Commander’s Representative to SCANZ. LTCDR Worth was awarded the Cadet Forces Medal in 2000 and eight years later received the first bar. From 2011-2015 he undertook the role of Boats Officer after stepping down as unit commander. He resumed command of TS Amokura in December 2014.
Outside of cadets, LT CDR Worth is married with two young children, lives in Upper Hutt and works for the New Zealand Defence Force in a civilian logistics role, overseeing the operation of the NATO Codification System.
